PUNCHES AND DIES

Tooling for standard tablets

Tooling for standard tablets refers to the set of specialized components used in a tablet press machine to shape and compress powders into uniform tablets. The most common tooling systems are referred to as B-tooling and D-tooling, which define the punch and die set dimensions, such as size, shape, and depth, and they are used based on tablet size and press type. Here's a breakdown of the standard tablet tooling:

Key Components of Tablet Tooling:

  1. Punches:
    • Upper Punch: Enters the die from above to compress the powder into the desired shape.
    • Lower Punch: Supports the powder in the die, moves upward to compress, and then ejects the tablet.
    • Punches come in different sizes, shapes (round, oval, etc.), and may have special engraving for logo or identification purposes.
  2. Die:
    • The die holds the tablet material during compression, and the size and shape of the die cavity determine the final tablet's size and form.
    • The depth of the die defines the volume of powder compressed into a tablet.

Common Tooling Standards:

  1. B-Tooling:
    • Die Diameter: Typically 30.16 mm.
    • Punch Barrel Diameter: 19.00 mm.
    • Tablet Diameter Range: 3 mm to 16 mm.
    • Applications: Used for small to medium-sized tablets. Ideal for pharmaceutical tablets requiring high-speed production with smaller tablet sizes.
  2. D-Tooling:
    • Die Diameter: Typically 38.10 mm.
    • Punch Barrel Diameter: 25.4 mm.
    • Tablet Diameter Range: 10 mm to 25 mm.
    • Applications: Suitable for larger tablets, vitamins, supplements, or chewable tablets.
  3. BB and DB Tooling: These are variations of B and D tooling with smaller punch barrel diameters, which are commonly used for high-speed production and for machines with multiple tooling stations.

Additional Features

Other features that need to be considered when ordering punch tooling include the head design, keying requirements and tip relief. For dies, review taper type requirements.

Types of Tablet Shapes:

  • Round Tablets: Most common shape, easy to compress, and popular for both pharmaceutical and nutritional supplements.
  • Oval and Capsule-shaped Tablets: These shapes are preferred for ease of swallowing and are common for larger dosage forms.
  • Custom Shapes: Punches can be customized for specific branding needs, allowing for shapes like hearts, stars, or tablets with logos or unique designs.

Options

Tool steels and surface treatments help to increase tooling performance. Additionally, a high polish finish can increase tooling life.

  • Steel Options: A2, D2, DC-53, D3, M2 PM-M4, S7, PM-3V, Tungsten Carbide, 440C and M340

  • Surface Treatment Options: Chrome Plating, Chromium Nitride, Pvd Coating, TIN or TIAIN (Titanium Nitride or Aluminium Nitride)  and DLC (Diamond like Crabon)

We manufacture both traditional tooling and tooling for high-throughput machines. High-throughput machines require tooling that is manufactured to tolerances more stringent than interchangeable tooling.

We adhere to the Tableting Specification Manual (TSM) guidelines regarding the design and manufacture of tablet tooling, which involve maintaining very tight tolerances.

We maintain a large inventory of steels and semi-finished stock for rapid delivery. If you frequently use tooling that is outside of our standard stock, however, please make us aware of your usage and we will be happy to stock additional sets on site. These items will be made available at no additional charge to you.

If you require specially engineered tablet press tooling, our design team will customize a solution to meet the demands of your application.

Standard Tooling

Standard Tooling is basically round and shaped tooling manufactured as per exact standards to suit any tablet press Worldwide. Pacific manufactures tooling in both TSM & EURO standards.

- Ascorp also manufactures EU1-441 D tooling, wherein the punch head diameter is 38mm for achieving better dwell time, suitable for Fette & Kilian Tablet compression machines.
- Ascorp also manufactures non-standard tooling according to customer requirements for manufacturing veterinary bolus tablets and for confectionery & detergent industry.
- Ascorp can also provides different tip options like short upper punch tip straight, bakelite relief, dust cups, bellows and universal punch groove seal upon request.
- Also different die options can be provided like tungsten carbide lined dies, taper dies with under cut for Multi-Tip, upon request.

Maintenance and Care:

Regular maintenance is crucial to prolonging the lifespan of tooling and ensuring tablet consistency. This includes:
  • Cleaning and Polishing: Keeps punches free from residue and helps prevent sticking.
  • Lubrication: Ensures smooth operation and reduces friction.
  • Inspection: Identifies wear or damage to prevent issues like tablet capping or breakage.

Tooling Selection:

Choosing the right tooling depends on factors like tablet size, shape, material, and production speed. For high-volume pharmaceutical manufacturing, automated systems often use multi-tip punches to increase efficiency by compressing multiple tablets per punch cycle.
In summary, tablet tooling is highly specialized, and selecting the right standard tools, such as B- or D-tooling, is critical for efficient production and ensuring consistent tablet Technology
